Spousal Support & Alimony

Spousal Support Mediator – Carol Delzer at Family Law Center

What is spousal support?

In California, spousal support is the term for alimony. It is money that one spouse pays to help support the other after the filing of a dissolution. This financial assistance helps the spouse become self-supporting after the divorcing couple separates. And there are several factors involved in determining the amount, so we highly recommend that you consult with a family law attorney to preserve your legal rights.
Often, Temporary Spousal Support is needed, and it can be determined by guideline or by an agreement similar to child support. Each county has specific guidelines that are used to determine the amount based upon the income of each party. Family Law Center attorneys and mediators have the knowledge and resources, including the latest software programs, to determine the amount of Guideline Support the law requires.

How is the amount calculated?

The amount and duration of spousal support can be a complex matter. Permanent Spousal Support takes many factors into consideration. These include but are not limited to: the standard of living during the marriage, the length of the marriage, the age and health of each spouse, each spouse’s income and earning capability and job history, and any other relevant factors.

Can spousal support be modified?

Unlike child support, spousal support cannot always be modified. It depends on the original order, and a change in circumstance is also a factor. Each case is different, and we highly recommend that you seek the advice of a qualified family law attorney to assist you.

Can we make alternative arrangements?

The law does allow spouses to make agreements that are different from the Support Guideline, as long as they are reasonable. The experienced spousal support attorneys at Family Law Center are settlement-oriented and can help you and your spouse reach an agreement regarding spousal support.
